Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning or queer (LGBTQ)  youth are at elevated risk for bullying and violence victimization, mental health problems, drug and alcohol use, and exhibiting poor performance in school.

LGBTQ youth are:

  • About 30% more likely than non -LGBTQ youth to experience harassment and bullying at school
  • 30-40 % more likely to exhibit chronic sadness

  • 2-3 times more likely to smoke cigarettes, binge drink, and have been drunk or high at school

  • And receive substantially fewer social supports from teachers and peers at school than their counterparts who do not identify as LGBTQ
