STORY MAPS

Story maps demonstrate the main plot elements of every book/story. This strategy can effectively be used to direct student focus to important plot points, story elements, and themes. Practice with story maps improves reading comprehension and teaches children how to navigate stories on their own.

How to use story maps:

  1. Discuss the main components of a story (e.g., characters, setting, plot and theme OR beginning, middle, end).

  2. Provide each student with a blank story map and explain how to complete it.

  3. As students read, have them complete the story map.

  4. After reading, discuss together so students can fill in any missing parts.
